Congressman Pat Ryan Demands a Halt to Central Hudson’s Rate Increase, Supports PULP’s Motion to Deny

Ryan previously slammed Central Hudson’s request to increase utility rates while billing issues persist

WASHINGTON, DC –  Today, Congressman Pat Ryan announced his support for the Public Utility Law Project of New York (PULP)’s filing of a motion to deny Central Hudson’s request for a utility rate increase. On July 31st, Central Hudson filed with the New York Public Service Commission to increase electric rates by 16% and natural gas rates by 19%. PULP filed the motion following a series of public hearings held by the New York Public Service Commission that allowed Central Hudson customers to voice their opinions on the proposed rate increase.

“It’s absolutely unacceptable for Central Hudson to raise costs on our hard-working families, who are already under serious financial pressure, especially until it fixes every one of its billing issues,” said Congressman Pat Ryan. “Central Hudson customers made it clear at the hearings that they still have not received the resolution that they deserve. I fully stand with PULP in fighting to do right by Hudson Valley families and prevent Central Hudson from raising rates until all of its customers are made whole.”

In July, Congressman Ryan immediately demanded that Central Hudson stop any rate hikes until resolving its billing issues. Congressman Ryan called attention to the New York Public Service Commission’s public hearing series, which was widely attended in both virtual and in-person meetings. In July, an independent monitor was appointed in an effort to hold Central Hudson accountable on their promise to fix their billing failures.

Central Hudson replaced its CEO following Representative Ryan’s calls for his resignation on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Ryan has held a series of workshops connecting Central Hudson customers in NY-18 with company representatives to resolve billing issues, establish accountability, and rebuild trust.
