Federal funds will help Warwick Valley Prevention Coalition increase outreach, support, resources, and educational programming at the Warwick Valley Central School District
WARWICK, NY – Today, Congressman Pat Ryan announced that he secured $125,000 in federal funds for the Warwick Valley Prevention Coalition to combat youth drug use and addiction. The Coalition will use the funds to increase outreach, support, resources, and educational programming for the students at the Warwick Valley Central School District to reduce alcohol and illicit drug use.
“Addiction is tearing Hudson Valley families apart and stealing the bright futures of our kids with gut-wrenching frequency. I’m pushing to end that vicious cycle,” said Congressman Pat Ryan. “I’m proud to deliver this crucial funding that will help prevent addiction in the Hudson Valley, and look forward to continuing to work with the Warwick Valley Prevention Coalition as we fight to end youth drug use.”
“The Warwick Valley Prevention Coalition is very pleased and proud to announce that we have been awarded a $125,000 Year 6 Drug-Free Communities continuation award,” said Kerry Malone-Demetroules, Youth Coordinator for the Warwick Valley Prevention Coalition. “There are approximately 750 communities in all of the 50 states that receive these grants. We are excited to be one of them as we continue to work towards our goals and collaborate with all of our community organizations. Our youth Coalition groups have grown to over 50 members and they can be found doing many community service projects and events in the town and villages of Warwick. Such as this past month's National Night Out and coming up: our Halloween Hoopla and most importantly we are part of the Red Ribbon week celebration with the Warwick Valley Central Schools.”
Ryan serves on the Congressional Dads Caucus and the Bipartisan Addiction and Mental Health Task Force and is a cosponsor of the Mental Health Services for Students Act.
Ryan has also aggressively focused on the fight against illicit drug supply and use, especially illicit fentanyl trafficking, including cosponsoring the Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act and the END FENTANYL Act. Congressman Ryan has made repeated calls for increased funding to combat illicit fentanyl trafficking.
The $125,000 Drug-Free Community (DFC) Support Program grant awarded to the Warwick Valley Prevention Coalition is funded by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP.) The Coalition plans to use the funds to increase the awareness of risks associated with youth drug and alcohol use among 8th through 12th graders by increasing attendance at its weekly meetings and activities, increasing educational programming, and modifying access, consequences, and environment.
